What is the first thing you do when you plan for a vacation? Chances are, you first determine where you want to go! In life, knowing where you want to be after 5, 10, 25 years, and so on is as important as knowing your vacation destination. In this article, I will share with you 5 Benefits of Having a Life Vision.
I’ve been married recently and I remember I was not really as excited about planning the wedding ceremony as to planning our honeymoon.
I love my wife and I know she likes Disney so much so the first decision we have to make for our honeymoon is where we would go. We are deciding whether we would go to a Disney Cruise or Disney Theme Park.
Believe it or not, but there are a lot of things hanging on this decision.
Without knowing where to go, we wouldn’t know how much it would cost us therefore budgeting would be hard. Depending on the location, the time of travel must be considered as well. Not being able to decide where to go would also mean it is close to impossible to know what to bring or what to prepare for.
My point here is as a traveler/ vacationer, knowing your destination is important and must be done before anything else.
Likewise, I believe that each one of as is permanent travelers. Everyone (whether we like it or not) has to start somewhere and go somewhere. That said, we must be able to decide where to go or else we will be lost and we will wander for the rest of our life.
I hope this article will help you understand the benefits of having a life vision.

5 Benefits of Having a Vision
You Know Where You Are Going
The first benefit of having a life vision is it helps you to know where you want to go.
Imagine life vision as the destination address you type on your GPS.
Without knowing the destination, it would not matter if you have a sophisticated GPS and/or a multi-million dollar car – you will not reach your destination.
By knowing where you want to go you can easily answer some of the most important questions in your life.
- What are you going to do once you arrive at your destination?
- When are you planning to get there or how long it will take to get you there?
- Who are you bringing with you to make the journey fun and successful?
- How are you going to get there?
- Why do you want to get there?
I believe being able to answer those questions will help you understand the meaning and purpose of your life.
In other words, having a life vision will help you know where you want to go and this will give you direction in life and this can help you discover your life’s meaning and purpose. I also believe that knowing where you are going can keep your mental health in great condition since it can give you hope especially when life is tough. Your vision for yourself can become your light as you navigate through a dark tunnel.
Helps you plan how to get there
Another benefit of having a life vision is it will help you plan how to get there.
Imagine you and your friends will go on a trip, but refused to decide where are you going.
Will you have enough money to spend on the trip? Will you have enough and the right clothes to bring? How many luggage should you have? Are you emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually ready for the trip? Since you know you don’t know your destination answering these questions is close to impossible.
Likewise, if you don’t have a life vision, taking the next step or making the right decisions in your life would be close to impossible.
If you know where you want to be after x years, you will be able to plan and strategize to get to your destination within the time frame and as efficiently as possible.
Help you focus on reaching your destination
Roadtrip is fun. Pick a destination, hop in your car, and drive!
I think there are two ways to do this.
First, you stop and check all the interesting things you see. Second, you focus on your destination and avoid stop-overs.
Personally, I would prefer option two because it is an enjoyable game for me to reach my destination faster than what my GPS estimates. Also, I decided on a destination for a reason. I want to enjoy the destination so I try to spend less energy and time on the journey so I have more of those for the destination.
If you don’t have a life vision, it would be really easy for you to get lost and get distracted on the beautiful things along the way. I guess that is okay if that’s your trip, but I think having a life vision will help you focus on the grander and the real thing over temporary distractions.
Encourages you not to give up
Sometimes things don’t go according to plan when traveling.
Maybe you forget your passport, lose your wallet, get into altercations, etc. These things can discourage you to stop on your tracks, turn around, and head for home.
Giving up mid-way is much easier if you don’t have a destination or if your destination is not that rewarding. However, it is likely that you will persevere and continue your journey in spite of setbacks if you know your destination and especially if you are aware of the reward waiting for you there.
This is true in life.
If you don’t have a life vision or your life vision is not great or rewarding, I can assure you that you would easily give up halfway in your journey especially when things get tough.
Forces you to use your resources responsibly
Imagine you are from New York and you know you need to go to Florida, that is 17hrs drive!
Since you know your destination, you will most likely be going to bring enough money, clothes, gas, and food for the journey. It is also likely that you will be frugal on using your resources because you don’t want to be stranded.
Now, what if you don’t know where you are going and just pack up things?
Chances are you will either squander your resources or not use it at all.
In real life, having a life vision means it will help you maximize what you have and use it efficiently.
For example, if you want to become a doctor so you can help the marginalized, then you will most likely not gonna spend on things that will not help you become a doctor. You will also not waste your time on trivial things that will delay you from getting your license.
